Inti Raymi is the celebration of the sun, it is the New Solar Year for Indigenous communities along the Andean mountain range. This festival/celebration is mainly held by Quichua Aymaras from the Tawantinsuyu or Pusinsuyu regions (what are today called Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Northern Argentina, some Eastern regions in Chile).
Queschua-Aymara cosmogony revolves around the interplay of two universal forces: male and female, up and below, the sun and his daughters/sons (us human beings). The Inti Raymi (or Jatun Punchay) is meant to symbolize the eternal consecration of marriage between the Sun and his daughters/sons. This celebration also is a conversational process between:
the world up above (Hawa Pacha or Alaj Pacha);
this world (Kay Pacha or Aka Pacha);
the mysterious world of down below (Uku Pacha or Manqha Pacha); and
the spiritual world of the dead ones (Chayshuk Pacha).
The 24th of June Andean peoples everywhere celebrate the winter solstice, that is to say the beginning of the Sun's New Year. According to Western scientific knowledge the solstice begins on June the 21st; however the Pacha Unachaq, which is a sundial used by the Incas, indicates that the sun settles in the same place for some days before June 24th sunrise. And this is the precise day that high priests and Andean nations proclaim as the New Year, the Inti Raymi. Traditionally, the major events takes place in the archeological complex of Sacsayhuamán, or the Sacred House of the Sun. The ceremony is carried out in Quechua by high priests and community leaders
We are quichua-aymara nations wandering all over our Mother Earth. We live in Canada now and on this sister land we have organized ourselves into the Andean Council of First Nations (or Consejo Andino de Naciones Originarias –CANO). We will celebrate the Inti Raymi with Nature’s elements: water, fire, hearth and the sun. We will celebrate the most important celebration in the Andean worldsupported by our sisters/brothers from other nations in the Latin American continent.
The INTI RAYMI is a sacred celebration of life, of the Sun. This celebration is a bridge among indigenous peoples, among people from all other cultures seeking a peaceful and harmonious world, where social justice, respect to our Mother Earth, and recognition of our role of our Mother’s well being guardians (as opposed to proprietors), need to be celebrated.
People from the Andean region, our sisters/brothers from other aboriginal communities from Latin America and First Nations from Canada, as well as individuals and/or groups that recognize our identity and our rights as nations are invited to participate in this event. We open our hearts to all whose intentions are to have a peaceful world where we respect each other, we honour and respect our Mother Earth and we build bridges between our cultures.
